SOLS CEO Salary Survey Report 2003In February 2003, all SOLS libraries were asked to complete a short salary survey. Completed surveys were returned by 132 out of a possible 192, representing almost 70% participation. Responses were received from small, medium and large libraries (with each group having a similar response rate). For the first time, First Nations libraries also participated in the survey. The list of respondents is attached as Appendix 1. The survey was undertaken in response to many requests for information about pay. CEO’s and boards often ask how their pay compares to that of others in the same size category. SOLS and individual libraries are often doing quick surveys to respond to these questions. The purpose of this survey is to provide a database that is comprehensive in its coverage of libraries in southern Ontario and that allows comparisons on a variety of different factors. Miriam Irwin was hired to design, administer and analyze the survey. She consulted with Greg Hayton who has done a salary survey for CELPLO for several years and Gwen Wheeler who completed SOLS’ salary survey for populations under 30,000 last year. The questionnaire was distributed with a March 7, 2003 deadline and data was requested for 2002. Libraries were questioned and corrections made where responses appeared significantly inconsistent. The following charts present the basic findings for groups of libraries. At the request of a CEO or library board, SOLS will do a customized sort of the raw data, though at no time will we provide data that identifies individual libraries without their permission. The attached charts show the number of libraries in a size group, the average salary maximum for that group, the median, then the highest and lowest reported salary maximums from the respondents in that group. For definitions of these terms, please see Appendix 2. As an example to aid in interpreting the survey data, the first chart in Chart 1 shows that there were 12 libraries that responded to our questionnaire in the size group 50,000 to 99,900 population, out of a possible 16 of that size. Looking at the salary maximums reported for that same size group, the average salary is calculated as $90,182, the median is $93,500, the highest maximum in that group is $100,861, and the lowest maximum salary is $60,522. The following charts are attached:
