![]() Advancing Public Library Leadership (APLL)The Advancing Public Library Leadership (APLL) Institute is designed to expand and advance the leadership capacity of public library CEOs and managers. Launching in the fall of 2008, the APLL Institute’s certificate program will take approximately two years to complete, with participating library staff undergoing independent course work in 12 key areas, complemented by highly interactive classroom sessions. Aimed at public library staff with leadership aspirations, with and without the M.L.I.S. degree, the program consists of an introductory course followed by courses in two streams: Organizational Leadership; and Leading in the Municipal Environment. Participants take all 12 courses, providing a good foundation in both organizational and municipal leadership. Individuals accepted into the APLL Institute are expected to have a good understanding of the management of library services and operations as signified by completion of a degree or diploma in library studies or the EXCEL certificate program in managing a small public library, and/or current employment as a manager in a public library setting.
Courses are being developed and presented by experts within the public library community, the municipal and not-for-profit sectors (more about presenters).
The first intensive (2 days of classroom sessions) is November 12-14th, 2008 at the Kempenfelt Conference Centre, near Barrie, Ontario. We start with dinner on the 12th and end before dinner on the 14th. Presenters for these initial sessions will be renowned library consultant Rebecca Jones, from the consulting firm Dysart & Jones, and SOLS consultant Anne Marie Madziak. There will be three additional intensives in June 2009, November 2009, and June 2010 [course offerings & tentative schedule]. The APLL Institute features a practice-based approach to leadership that highlights the importance of relationships and connectedness, while allowing for individual leadership style and expression. There are nine leadership practices that form the basis of the APLL Leadership Self-Assessment Tool, a questionnaire currently being tested with emerging and potential leaders working in a public library setting. For more information about the origins and evolution of the program and/or proposed content, please read Advancing Public Library Leadership (APLL): A SOLS Training Initiative.
