ASSIGNMENT 4

Submit this assignment to your tutor within the timeframe given on the schedule of contact sessions accompanying this course.

Your assignment for this module concerns both self-checkout and theft detection.

Your board is concerned about staffing levels, but also about the amount of materials that the library could not find when it last completed an inventory. In order to achieve increased efficiency both in service and in the deployment of staff, they are suggesting that the library begin to use a self-checkout system. The other point is that the library has received a bequest of $100,000, so that money is not the stumbling block in this project. And you have been given the task of preparing a report on the implementation of both the self-checkout and the theft detection system.

To do this, review all the information provided in the module, as well as the information provided in Appendix K. You may also need to visit those websites to get more information. Prepare a 2-3 page report on the advantages and disadvantages of implementing such a system in your library or library branch. Be sure to include information on whether to would be possible to physically install such a system in your location (e.g. not enough space). Also include information on what you think the public would think of the library moving in this direction (e.g. are there enough people interested in checking their own materials out of the library?).
