ASSIGNMENT 3

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course. There are two parts to this assignment but you will complete only one (1) part. The one selected will depend on the situation in your library. The assignment should be no more than 4 - 5 pages. Be sure to put your name on each page of the assignment and to keep a copy.

Group 1 - Beginning a video service

If a video service is not yet in place in your library, assume that the community needs assessment has shown that a video collection should be started. This part of the assignment will be completed as if the collection was to begin.

  1. Discuss your plans for the new video collection. Describe the types of videos to be collected (i.e. home use or public performance) and what the composition of the collection will be (i.e. 80% entertainment and 20% non-fiction). Be sure to cover funding, circulation systems, loan periods, and to describe how the collection will be organized.

  2. Use at least 3 on-line Web-based catalogues mentioned earlier in the module (page 11) to make a list of videos for your new collection. Let's assume that a local service organization gave you $1000.00 (in Canadian funds) for the purchase of new videos. To avoid getting into too much detail about discounts, taxes and shipping charges, assume that you have negotiated a 10% discount, will pay 7% G.S.T. and 8% P.S.T. and have free shipping and handling.

Group 2 - Expanding your video collection

If your library already has a video collection, your assignment is to write down “everything there is to know about the collection”

  1. Describe the video collection. Describe the types of videos collected (i.e. home use or public performance) and the composition of the collection (i.e. 80% entertainment and 20% non-fiction). Be sure to cover funding, circulation system used, loan periods, security and describe how the collection is organized.

  2. Use at least 3 on-line Web-based catalogues mentioned earlier in the module (page 11) to make a list of videos to add to your collection. Let's assume that a local service organization gave you $1000.00 (in Canadian funds) for the purchase of new videos to supplement the existing collection. To avoid getting into too much detail about discounts, taxes and shipping charges, assume that you have negotiated a 10% discount, will pay 6% G.S.T. and 8% P.S.T. and have free shipping and handling.
