E14 – Non-book materials
Final examination
This is a "take home" examination. You may spend as much time as you
wish to complete the exam and you may consult whatever resources you
choose. There are two (2) questions to be completed and your
completed exam should be three to four pages in length.
The examination must be returned to your tutor no later than seven
days after you receive the examination. Be sure to put your name on all
pages and to keep a copy of your completed exam.
QUESTION 1 -
Discuss the role of non-book media in public libraries. Explain the
reasons why non-book materials would be collected in public libraries.
QUESTION 2 -
The board has decided that non-book material (video, audio, CD-ROM,
microform) will definitely to be part of your library's collection in
the next year.
If you do not have any non-book materials in your collection,
pick one of the four listed above. Discuss how collecting this material
and offering the services would have an impact on your library.
If you already have non-book materials, discuss how collecting
non-book materials and offering the services have had an impact on your
library.
You might wish to cover such topics as the impact on the budget,
physical space required to store the material, processing, time required
to select the materials, reserve system and overdue material
