EXCEL: A certificate programme in
managing a small public library

E2-Basic Library Management

ASSIGNMENT 6

Your assignment for this module is to prepare procedures for Disaster Planning and Emergency. Many small libraries are without procedures in this area and the exercise of writing the procedures will help you be more prepared for an emergency, however small.

Step 1:  To help you to begin, answer the following questions that relate to emergency planning. Answer yes or No to each question, and where you have a "No", indicate what you might be able to do to address this question.

Is the emergency telephone number for your area posted near each telephone extension?
Is there emergency lighting at each exit from the library?
Do you have an emergency building evacuation plan?
Is the emergency building evacuation plan posted in the library?
Have you and your staff practiced the emergency building evacuation plan?
Do you have a flashlight, and spare batteries, at the library?
Does the library have a first aid kit?
Does the library have a staff person who has been trained in first aid or CPR?
Do you have a backup tape/system for computer data?
Is the back-up tape/system stored off-site?
Do you have a list of items in the library, and is a copy of the list stored off-site?
Are the bookcases and display cases fastened to the wall (where applicable)?
Do you have at least one (working) fire extinguisher at the library?

Step 2:  Write a one page emergency preparedness plan for your library. On a separate sheet, sketch an emergency building evacuation plan for your library (or one of the branches if you responsible for more than one site).

Submit the entire report to your tutor - the plan, the answers to the questions and the sketch.
