EXCEL: A certificate programme in
managing a small public library

E20 - Programming

FINAL EXAM

This is a ‘take home’ examination and does not require the presence of an exam supervisor.  Spend as much time as you wish to complete the examination.  You may consult whatever resources you choose.  Return the examination to your tutor no later than seven days after receiving the examination.  Be sure to keep a copy of your completed exam.

There are two (2) questions in this examination and you must complete both questions.

Question 1 – The Best Program Ever

Throughout this course, we asked you to think of ideas for programs aimed at young adults and for adults.  For this question, you will once again think of a program, but this time, think about the best library program that you have ever been a part of.  You can either have been a participant or you could have run the program.  It could have taken place at your current local library, or at a library somewhere else.

Now:

  1. Describe the program (including the title if you can remember).  The description should include the location, number of people participating and what you actually did during the program time.
  2. In a paragraph, describe why you thought that the program deserved the title of “best library program” ever.

Question 2 – Space for programming

As was mentioned in the course, every library has a different space arrangement.  Some are fortunate to have a special program room with a kitchen, while others just use the library.  For this question, you will need to write a proposal to put an addition onto your library (this is not an architectural question about whether there is room on the library property but rather a “space” question).  While the proposal should be descriptive in nature, it must address these three questions, at a minimum:

  • What size and type of room would be best for your community library?
  • What would you put into the space, e.g. folding tables, chairs and storage, carpeting, tile, murals on the wall?
  • Why would you want that kind of space in your library?  (in other words, tell us who might use this space, and for what?)
