E4-Information Services

ASSIGNMENT 1

Submit this assignment to your instructor/tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on each page of the assignment.

Your assignment for this module is to keep a record of your work at the library over the course of one day (or one shift of several hours).

  1. Keep track of the type of work you are doing throughout the period of time. For example:

12:30 to1:15 p.m. - worked at the circulation desk & checked out 25 books for 5 different patrons

1:30 to 2 p.m. - conducted a pre-school storytime with 8 children attending

2 to 2:30 p.m.- worked at the reference desk & answered 3 informational questions and 1 which I would considered readers’ advisory work

  1. Using the ‘types of information services’ section as a guideline, summarize the work undertaken during the day (or shift). This summary will be about 1/2 page long. If you don’t happen to be working with any of these categories, describe a day or situation where you were.

Submit copies of both the recording sheet and the 1/2 page summary to your tutor.

  1. As an addition to the assignment, submit a brief description of what you would like to achieve from this course. For example, learn more about helping patrons find material, more familiarity with reference sources, or just a general understanding of information services.
