ASSIGNMENT 2

Submit this assignment to your instructor/tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on each page of the assignment.

Your assignment for this module is to find the answers to all nine (9) questions which follow on the next three pages. Your method of search and your approach to the question are as important as finding the right answer. For each of the questions:

  1. Determine whether it is a ready reference or a research question.
(refer to the section under the heading ‘Categorize the question’).

  2. List all sources you checked before finding the answer, giving the headings or entries tried in each case. Give the page number and title of the best source (the one in which you found the answer) and a brief note of answers found (don’t copy lengthy answers-- just describe in a few words, e.g., “a list of all colours is shown”).

  3. Assume that more information relating to the question was required by the patron, and give one other example of what you would try next. Subject headings are appropriate, or if you cite a specific source, tell what you would hope to find in it.

All these questions can be answered using:

  1. a general almanac (World Almanac and Book of Facts or Information Please Atlas and Yearbook)
  2. a general encyclopedia (The World Book Encyclopedia)
  3. Sears Subject Headings or Library of Congress Subject Headings
  4. a good general dictionary
  5. a Canadian source (The Canadian Encyclopedia)

Other sources may be used as well. An example of the information required for an answer appears below.

EXAMPLE:

Who did George Washington (first President of the U.S.) marry?

  1. Ready reference
  2. The World Book Encyclopedia. Looked up Washington, George in index and was referred to Volume 2, p. 303. Found answer: Martha Dandridge Custis.
  3. More information would be found in subject card catalogue under Washington, Martha or Presidents--United States--Wives (LC) or Presidents--United States--Spouses (Sears).
