ASSIGNMENT 5
Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the
schedule accompanying this course.
Your assignment for this module is to write a critique about the
poster reprinted on the next page in terms of the message and appeal.
Use the questions which follow as a guide. The critique should be about
1 page in length.
Look at the message and think of the presumed audience.
- Is the message clear and obvious?
- Is there one simple message or is it trying to convey too much
information?
- Do the lettering and elements reflect the tone of the message?
Examine the device used to attract attention.
- Is there something to catch the eye of someone passing by, such
as an object, colour, special effect, slogan, etc.?
- Is the emphasis directly on the key part of the message?
Look at the details of the design.
- Is the lettering large and easily read?
- Is there too much reading to be done by an observer?
- Is the total display neat, clean and carefully put together?
- Are there any lines created which lead the observer away from
the point of emphasis?
- Are there any large, empty spaces which look awkward rather than
effective?
Remember that by analyzing the work of others, you will get an
idea of what things are important in designing your own promotional
materials. Find a poster from your library (or create one if you do not
have any). On one page, address the questions listed above. Then answer
the question -- Is my poster effective in terms of message and
appeal?
