E6-Basic Collection Development

ASSIGNMENT 3

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course.

The topic for this assignment is GIFTS AND DONATIONS.

Existing policy

  • Determine whether your library (or branch) has a written policy that covers the area of gifts and donations.
  • Copy the policy or sections from the collection development policy.

Existing practice

  • In one page or less, describe what happens when patrons deliver books and other materials to the library (e.g. material is sorted by branch staff, paperbacks are placed on shelf for processing at the branch and hardcover books are sent to headquarters for further processing)

Personal opinion

  • In one page or less, describe what you think should happen to donated materials. (e.g. should be treated as if purchased, thrown in the garbage)

Desirable policy

  • For the final part of the assignment, write the section of the collection development policy that deals with gifts. If your library (or branch) already has a policy that covers this area, rewrite the section to suit the reality of the situation (and to better reflect what YOU think should happen.) Remember that policies should be general, broad, and flexible enough for unusual circumstances. Use positive, simple language; avoid library jargon and specific procedural details.
