E6-Basic collection development
Final examination
This is a ‘take home’ examination and does not require the presence
of an exam supervisor. Spend as much time as you wish to complete the
examination. You may consult whatever resources you choose. Return the
examination to your tutor no later than seven days after receiving the
examination. Be sure to put your name on all pages and keep a copy of
your completed exam.
There is only one (1) question in this examination but you
must complete all five (5) sections.
Collection Development Plan
You are to prepare a three-year collection development plan for your
library as described through the course, but particularly in Module 4.
Write your plan as though you were presenting it to the library board.
Divide your plan into the following sections.
I. Introduction
Include background information about the community and any
general trends, for example, new housing development, more senior
citizens, etc.
II. Objectives for the collection
Using Example 2 in Module 4, prepare at least two collection
development objectives. These should be in response to the general
community trends that were identified in section I (above).
III. Collection ‘standards’
Compare your collection to the minimum collection standards
described in Module 4. You might find arranging the information into
a chart to be very helpful. In one or two paragraphs, describe how
your library matches the projections in terms of total collection
size as well as the subject and category breakdown shown in Example
1 of Module 4. Explain any significant departures from this category
breakdown.
IV. Priorities for purchase
In assignment 4, you provided short term plans for the
collection. In this section of the report, identify priorities for
purchase in each of the next three years.
V. Buying plan
For each of the three years, allocate your budget by percentages.
Note the areas designated as priorities for development.
