E7- Collection Development for Children

ASSIGNMENT 1

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date specified on the schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on all pages.

Your assignment for this module deals with the collection development policy. Answer the following questions.

  1. Is there a written collection development policy in your library? Is the policy for the entire library or specifically for children’s material? Include a copy if possible.

  2. What percentage of the annual budget of the library is spent on children’s material? (Use an average year and include all formats)

  3. Where is most of the children’s material purchased? (ie. Library Services Center, book store, publisher, etc.) Why?

  4. Is children’s material purchased in paperback format? Why or why not?

  5. How many titles are weeded from the children’s collection in an average year? What criteria is used for the weeding?

  6. What is the procedure in your library for handling challenged materials? That is, how are patron complaints about a particular book handled?

Your assignment should be about 2 pages in length.
