E7- Collection Development for Children

ASSIGNMENT 4

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date specified on the schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on all pages.

A book list can be used to help children and their parents to find material in the library. It can also be used as a public relations tool in marketing the library to the community and library users. Every year, students go to public libraries across Ontario looking for ideas for their science fair projects. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a list of material that you can hand out to students?

Create a list of materials in your library which might help students with science projects and experiments. Include materials on general science experiments, as well as any you might have on experiments in astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, ecology, electronics and physics.

The book list should include:

• the title, author (if known), date of publication and call number or classification number of each item

• a one-line summary or annotation of the contents of the book

A sample entry might look like this:

551.22 Nic
Nicolson, Cynthia Pratt. Earthquake! Toronto: Kids Can Press, 2002

The book features amazing photography, interesting facts and diagrams about earthquakes, as well as fascinating stories about famous earthquakes and the rescue efforts that follow.

You should also include:

  • a title page for your list which explains what is included in the list and gives the name of the library and the date that the list was created.

The list, including the title page, should not be longer than three (3) pages.
