E7- Collection Development for Children
ASSIGNMENT 5
Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date specified on the
schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on all
pages.
For this assignment, you have a choice between reading and
evaluating
- culturally sensitive material and
- material about children with disabilities or special needs (for
example, physical disabilities, developmentally delayed)
Choose one area and do not do both You can choose either
fiction or non-fiction and either print, video or cassette, and then
complete the rest of the assignment as outlined.
Step 1 - Select two titles which are either about other
cultures or about children of other cultures or select two titles
which are for children with disabilities or special needs. The items can
be to about the Grade 6 reading level. You may select items by the
authors which appear in this module or other books in your collection.
Step 2 - Read the two books or preview the non-print material.
Step 3 - If you choose the first option, you will need to
evaluate the book for racism and sexism. Use the guidelines and the
questions listed with each guideline from Appendix P as a basis for your
evaluation. This evaluation should be about 1 page in length. If you
choose the second option, be sure to review the information on this
topic within the module. (rather than only using the information in
Appendix P).
Step 4 - Write a description using the outline which appears on the
next page. You will notice that the first page of the format is quite
similar to the one used in Module 3. Finally, be sure to include points
from your evaluation.
