E7- Collection Development for Children

ASSIGNMENT 5

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date specified on the schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on all pages.

For this assignment, you have a choice between reading and evaluating

  1. culturally sensitive material and
  2. material about children with disabilities or special needs (for example, physical disabilities, developmentally delayed)

Choose one area and do not do both You can choose either fiction or non-fiction and either print, video or cassette, and then complete the rest of the assignment as outlined.

Step 1 -  Select two titles which are either about other cultures or about children of other cultures or select two titles which are for children with disabilities or special needs. The items can be to about the Grade 6 reading level. You may select items by the authors which appear in this module or other books in your collection.

Step 2 -  Read the two books or preview the non-print material.

Step 3 -  If you choose the first option, you will need to evaluate the book for racism and sexism. Use the guidelines and the questions listed with each guideline from Appendix P as a basis for your evaluation. This evaluation should be about 1 page in length. If you choose the second option, be sure to review the information on this topic within the module. (rather than only using the information in Appendix P).

Step 4 - Write a description using the outline which appears on the next page. You will notice that the first page of the format is quite similar to the one used in Module 3. Finally, be sure to include points from your evaluation.

Coverage/Plot: about one paragraph

Illustrations:

  • style (e.g. realistic, cartoon, nostalgic)
  • colour (e.g. bright, pastel, dark), black and white
  • full-page or scattered throughout the text

Format:

  • binding (e.g. hardcover, paperback)
  • size (e.g. mass market, trade, oversize)

Reading aloud:

  • discuss suitability for use with groups

Reading level:

  • indicate the age (e.g. 6-8 years) or grade level (e.g. grades 1-3) of children able and likely to read the material independently.

Interest range:

  • indicate the age or grade level of children likely to be interested in the material

Controversial points:

  • discuss any features that might be considered objectionable by some evaluation groups. If there are no such points, state ‘none’.

Outstanding points:

  • discuss any features you feel are particularly good
