8. Collection Development for Young Adults
ASSIGNMENT 2
Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the
schedule accompanying this course. Your assignment for this module is to
use some of the reviewing journals and resources to locate and assess
titles for your collection.
Unless you have access to the print version of these reviewing
journals, use the websites of the reviewing journals as found on page
17. We would suggest that you stick to three of the following:
VOYA:Voice of youth advocates.
CM: a reviewing journal of Canadian materials for young people.
Manitoba Library Association.
Quill & Quire.
School Library Journal.
On each of these websites, locate three (3) book reviews for
young adult materials. Read the reviews carefully. Take note of the
title, author, publication details (you can 'cut and paste' if you
wish). Also take note of at least one feature of the book that was
mentioned in the review.
You should now have a list of nine (9) titles for young adult
materials that have been reviewed in journals/websites. Decide whether
you think that the title would be a good addition to your collection.
For each title, write a paragraph about why you would or would not
purchase the title for your collection - in other words, you must
justify your choice. As a final step, check your list against your
library collection to see if you have the title in your library (or
library system) collection.
Your assignment will consist of your list of titles and the paragraph
write-up for each title.
