8. Collection Development for Young Adults
 

ASSIGNMENT 3

Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course. This assignment has two parts. You must complete both parts.

Part 1

On page 5 of this module, you were asked to review the booklist that was compiled by Toronto Public Library staff and posted under the "Fun Reads" section of TPL Ramp website. The 50 titles were organized under these headings: Hot Stuff, Laughing Out Loud, Nightmares, Out of This World, Real Life, and Summer Reads. You were to go to the TPL web site, http://ramp.torontopubliclibrary.ca/secondary/boredinthetdot/one-content.jsp ,and read through the booklist that is provided. You were to make note of the titles. Please submit a list of the titles from the booklist which you have in your library collection.

Part 2

The second part of your assignment for this module is to read two (2) young adult novels on the same theme or of the same genre. They must not be by the same author or in the same publisher’s series.

Submit the following information about each book. Use a separate sheet for each book.

  1. Bibliographic information: Author (last name, first name), title, publisher, and year
     
  2. Description: about one paragraph including a brief outline of the plot, major characters, setting, writing style, point of view, and theme.
     
  3. Format: include size, number of pages, whether it is paperback or hardback
     
  4. Interest level: indicate the age range of young adults who are most likely to be interested in the material
     
  5. Controversial points: note any features that might be considered objectionable by some groups
     
  6. Outstanding points: note any features which you consider particularly good.

Your written submission to your tutor should be 2 to 3 pages in length.
