8. Collection Development for Young Adults
ASSIGNMENT 6
Submit this assignment to your tutor by the date given on the
schedule accompanying this course. Be sure to put your name on all pages
and keep a copy of your assignment.
As a final assignment for this course, you are asked to reflect on
just what is being offered to young adults in your community library.
You should think about what stands out as something that could be
marketed to young adults in the community.
With this in mind, complete the three parts of this
assignment:
- In this module, we looked at different ways to market the
library to young adults. On page 2, a number of marketing methods
were listed including creating brochures, flyers, bookmarks or
booklists (*see note below). Create a bookmark to
highlight the services or programmes offered to young adults in your
library or highlight special parts of your young adult collection.
You may want to look again at the information given in the module or
in the appendixes to create your bookmark. The bookmark can be
computer-generated, typewritten or handwritten, as long as it is
neatly done. The contents and arrangement are more important.
- On one page, write an explanation about why you chose to
highlight this service, programme or part of the collection. For
example, is it new? is it a cooperative venture with the school or
another agency? did you undertake special fundraising to purchase
new young adult fiction titles?
- On a separate sheet, describe how you created the
bookmark (e.g., selected popular titles from our own collection,
used a pre-printed list as a model). Tell how you produced it (e.g.,
using Word, Publisher). Estimate how many you would
print or photocopy and where they would be distributed.
* A flyer is generally described as a one page promotional
piece printed on an 8½" x 11" sheet of paper. A brochure is
usually printed on the same size of paper, but is often folded with the
information printed in a different direction. If a number of pages are
included in the brochure, the product may be stapled in the fold. A
bookmark is often produced from the same 8½" x 11" sheet of paper or
cardboard, but 3 or 4 bookmarks could be printed on the same page,
depending on the width chosen. For this assignment, assume that your
bookmark is no wider than 4 inches and arrange your information
accordingly.
