E9-Collection Development for Adults

ASSIGNMENT 1

There are three steps to this assignment. Be sure to work carefully and completely through each step.

Step 1:

Select three lists from those lists which appear in Appendix C of this module.
• use one of the best seller lists
(e.g., The Globe & Mail’s National Bestseller List)
• use one of the Canadian Literary Prize lists
(e.g., Governor General’s Awards or Trillium Book Award)
• use one of the lists compiled by a reviewing journal
(e.g., American Library Association’s Notable Books List)

Step 2:

Compare the titles in your collection with the titles identified on the three selected lists. If you work in a branch of a county library or larger library system, use the collection in your branch, and not the entire system, unless you have access to a system-wide computer catalogue.

Step 3:

Using the information gathered, answer the following questions. We do acknowledge that book reviews and other selection devices have not been provided to assist you in deciding which titles to purchase. Keep in mind that the purpose of this assignment is to compare your collection to various lists, so please try to identify the necessary titles based on the information you have at hand.

  • What percentage of the titles on the 3 lists are held by your library (or branch)?
  • Of the titles not in your collection, identify five titles by different authors which you would purchase (assume that you have the budget to do so). Why would you purchase them?
  • Identify five titles which you would not purchase. Why would you not purchase them?

Submit your answers to the three questions to your tutor by the date given on the schedule accompanying this course. On your answer sheet, please indicate which lists you selected in Step 1 of your assignment. Be sure to include your name on each page and to keep a copy of your assignment.
