E1-Introduction to Public Libraries

ASSIGNMENT 5

Your assignment for this module deals with the physical organization of the library. Be sure to address both questions. Submit your assignment to your tutor by the date specified on the schedule of contact sessions and ensure that your name appears on each page.

In Module 3, 4 and the present one, you have examined the various collections, services and resources that one might find in a library. In this module, we also examined the importance of presenting the library is an open and friendly manner - complete with proper signage.

Question 1

To help the user find ‘where things are in the building’, provide a sketch of the floor plan for your library or library branch. Using the list from the activity in Module 3, (page 15) as a guide, indicate where the various library collections are located. On the sketch, mark the following (where applicable):

  • the entrances to the library
  • any service desks (circulation, reference, etc.)
  • study tables
  • easy chairs
  • the location of the library catalogue
  • the location of any major signs in the library (e.g. return books here).

Question 2

On a separate sheet(s), answer the following questions:

  • If a patron enters the library, is the layout of the library visible and easy to follow?
  • In your library, is each area of the library clearly marked so patrons know where to go for magazines, children’s room, fiction, check-out, etc.?
  • What changes would you make to the layout and view of the library to improve the ‘library environment’ (as discussed on pages 15 and 16 of the module). But keep in mind that to answer this question, you will have to leave budget problems aside.
  • Do you think that this sketch of the library would be helpful to new staff or new library users? Why or why not?
