E1-Introduction to Public Libraries

ASSIGNMENT 6

In Module 5 and in this module, we noted that public libraries do not operate alone. There are any number of other community resources to consider. After completing this assignment, you will have the beginnings of a community resource list. You might consider making this list available in your own library. Be sure to complete both parts of the assignment.

1.  Describe two local collections.

Use the categories below to construct a point form report on two local collections, for example, an early years centre, church library, historical society, archives. To use collections and services outside your library, you need to identify the services and be aware of the characteristics of the materials and their availability to the public. In general, you need to know, so be sure to include as much information about the collection as possible.

A.  Name, address, telephone numbers, hours of opening.

B.  Area of specialization:

  1. reading level or age group,
  2. subjects included,
  3. formats, i.e. what types of materials are available, such as maps, videos, government documents

C.  Range and size of on-site collection:

  1. books (number in collection)
  2. periodicals
  3. non-book materials (videos, CD-ROM)

D.  Services:

  1. access to Internet or other on-line information services
  2. access to other collections (e.g. interlibrary loan)
  3. research and reference services
  4. provision of service by telephone and fax
  5. circulation of material (e.g. any restrictions on loans, loan period)
  6. provision of brochures and pamphlets or similar materials which may be given away
  7. availability of photocopier

NOTE: If you cannot find two collections locally, complete the assignment with descriptions of web-based collection resources which might have some impact on your community. Two examples of this type of resource are the weather condition website of Environment Canada and the health unit’s parent-baby or health information toll-free telephone line.

2.  Evaluation of the resource file

At the end of the description of the other collection, write a short statement noting which resources you were not aware of before. You should also state at least two ways in which you will be able to improve your service as a result of having collected this information.
