Training
SOLS provides a variety of training opportunities for library staff
and trustees. We offer three certificate programs, a variety of
continuing education sessions as well as
Kempenfelt, a training program
targeted at branch staff in rural multi-branch systems.
Certificate Programs
EXCEL is a distance education program in managing a small public
library. The EXCEL program offers an opportunity for those working in a
public library without library training to acquire the necessary skills
in order to run a library.
Advanced EXCEL builds on the basic EXCEL courses but goes into
greater depth in targeted areas. The focus remains on staff and CEOs of
rural, small and medium sized public libraries.
The Advancing Public Library Leadership (APLL) Institute
is an exciting leadership training program designed to develop the
skills and competencies necessary for leading the public library
effectively in the municipal environment. The target audience is any
individual seeking or holding a leadership position in a public library,
including new CEOs, branch heads, middle managers, and mid-career
librarians transitioning from another sector.
Continuing Education
Workshops and
Webinars - SOLS offers a series of training opportunities in the
spring and fall on topics of interest to library CEOs, managers, public
service staff and trustees. Workshops are held at various locations
across southern Ontario to provide an opportunity for area library staff
to train together. Webinars are “live” training sessions in which
participants view the presentation through their Web-browser and listen
to the audio through their telephone.
SOLS staff can also provide specialized workshops upon request. They
can be delivered to the staff of an individual library or a group of
libraries. For further pricing information and referral, contact
Kempenfelt
SOLS works with ARUPLO (Administrators of Rural/Urban Public
Libraries of Ontario) in planning an annual County Library training
event. This week long training is held at the
Kempenfelt Centre near Barrie,
Ontario and is open to members of ARUPLO. Further information can be
found in the Kempenfelt section of
the website.
