This section includes links can be used as a starting point by library staff who want to provide reference and advice to children, teens and their parents. Literature resources for children and Youth can be found on our Youth Literature Resources page. See also Cybersites for Children and Cyberespace pour les jeunes, a list if useful links to support programming, home help and other library activities for children. We examine all these sites regularly and include only what is generally wholesome and educational for most children. Because Internet sites are always changing and standards vary from individual to individual, the content of the sites linked to on this page cannot be guaranteed to be appropriate for your children.

  • Children and the Internet: Policies That Work (ALA. Association for Library Service to Children) The links were selected to provide you with a chance to view different styles and approaches to writing public library Internet access policies. Some of the policies listed link to state and federal regulations that support the documents, others provide information on what happens if a customer behaves inappropriately, and others are simple outlines of appropriate use. All were updated and revised within the past three years.

  • Children's Storybooks Online - Stories for All Ages
  • TumbleBooks  TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of  – animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.  The TumbleBookLibrary collection is accessed online from every computer in your school or library with Internet connection, or from home through a direct link on your school or library website. Check at your public library.
For Parents
  • Every Child Ready to Read @ Ottawa Public Library. The Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) early literacy initiative from ALA is an innovative, research-based approach to developing six distinct pre-reading skills that children must know in order to learn to read. This  initiative has been adopted by the OPL. Their webpage program is singled out because OPL has translated all the promotional materials into French and posted these on their website, free to download. This includes handouts for parents and French book lists. Simply click on 'FRANÇAIS' at the top of the page.

  • Cyber Bullying: Encouraging Ethical Online Behaviour / Des leçons sur la cyberintimidation   (Media Awareness Network) Comprises a series of bilingual lessons intended to support and enhance school-based anti-bullying and empathy-building programs. The lessons give students a better understanding of the ethical and legal implications of cyber bullying and promote positive Internet use.
  • GetNetWise A public service brought to you by Internet industry corporations and public interest organizations to help ensure that Internet users have safe, constructive, and educational or entertaining online experiences.
  • Media Awareness Network Offers practical support for media education in the home, school and community and provides Canadians and others with information and "food for thought" on our fast-evolving media culture. It's also a place where educators, parents, students and community workers can share resources and explore ways to make media a more positive force in children's lives.

  • Screen It!: reviews movies, music and videos giving one-line descriptions, detailed look at plots, a chart analysis of the cast, a summary of "bad stuff" and lists of violent scenes in detail.
  • Understanding the Rating Systems (Media Awareness Network).  Rating systems can be helpful when trying to choose appropriate movies for your family, but with many different systems in use in Canada, they can also be very confusing.
