Digitization
Description
In conjunction with Knowledge Ontario, we developed a project to assist
libraries to digitize important collections.
Our
Ontario already provides a platform for management, storage and
display of digitized content. In addition, the Community Digitization
Project funded by the $15 million investment covers training and support
for local digitization staff to develop a digitization plan, oversee the
project on behalf of local libraries, and do the actual scanning and
tagging.
Eligible Libraries
All Ontario public libraries. Libraries were asked to submit a letter of
interest by May 7, 2009. Submissions were reviewed by OLS-North,
SOLS and Knowledge Ontario.
10 projects involving 31 libraries were selected.
Timelines
The first phase of the Community Digitization Project is underway. The
digitization facilitators and the assistants have been hard at work
digitizing and uploading the first sets of historical and local objects
for:
- Haldimand County Public Libraries
- Petawawa Public Library
- South River group of public libraries
- Head Clara & Maria Public Library
Phase two will start in the spring and will include the Prince Edward
County and Thessalon groups. West Nipissing group will start in May.
Phase three will roll out in August and October for the Seguin and
Schreiber groups and in January 2011 for the Clarence-Rockland group.
Come and hear the
details of the project at OLA Super Conference 2010 on Thursday,
February 25, 2010. In addition, Knowledge Ontario publishes
CDP: Notes from the Field periodically which provides an update on
the digitization projects.
