Downloadable Audiobooks from OverDrive
Description
We have completed negotiations for a two-year agreement with OverDrive to
provide a provincial collection of audiobooks. OverDrive’s download service
provides direct transfer to iPod, Zune, and virtually all MP3 players and is a
popular service for libraries’ mobile and connected users.
Our funding will cover start-up costs and maintenance fees for two years and an
initial collection valued at approximately $300,000. All libraries are also
entitled to a copy of the OverDrive Download Station software to be installed on one workstation
per
branch. Learn more about
OverDrive and view their
online demonstration.

Eligible Libraries
All Ontario public libraries
serving <100,000 population not already using OverDrive will have access to this collection. Libraries already offering this
service received a reimbursement that
was added to their library credit. A letter with details on the reimbursement
was sent to appropriate libraries
in June 2009. Click here to see the
reimbursement schedule.

Patron Authentication and Privacy
We have been asked about the exchange of personal information between
ILS systems and OverDrive during the authentication process. The
privacy policy on the downloadcentre.library.on.ca states:
- This site does not collect any patron
identification information except when specifically and knowingly
provided by such individuals. We do not collect, store, or provide
access to personal identifying information including name, address,
gender, or age of the patron.
- To authenticate users of the service, this site
requests the patron to enter their library card number. This is solely
for the purpose of communicating with the library's database to validate
the status of a library card account. During this process this site does
not access or retrieve any identifying information from the library's
patron database.
- The site also provides the user with an option to
supply an email address solely to notify the patron if a title on
reserve becomes available. Library card numbers and email information
are protected from unauthorized disclosure.
- In the case of other websites linked to our site or
any website accessed using the library’s computer, patrons are advised
to check the privacy statements of these sites and be cautious about
providing personal information.
