Subscribing to SOLS RSS Feeds Using Bloglines

1. Go to Bloglines at http://www.bloglines.com

2. At the top right of the page, click on register.

3. Follow the instructions to create an account in Bloglines.  It will ask you for your email, a 6 character (minimum) password of your choosing, and language and time zone preferences (EST).  They will send you an email to validate your registration.  Click on the link in your email to activate the account.  This will automatically log you into to Bloglines.  (If your not logged in automatically, you can go to www.bloglines.com and log in manually).

4. To add SOLS to your list of feeds, on the left side of the screen, click on the "Feeds" tab, then click on "Add".  It will ask you to enter in the "Blog or Feed URL".  Type in http://www.sols.org/solsrss.xml, then click on "Subscribe"

5. Bloglines will ask you to set the display options for this feed.  For now, scroll to the bottom and click on "Subscribe"

6. Go back to the "Feeds" tab. The Southern Ontario Library Service News feed will appear on your list of feeds on the left.  Click on it to read the feed.

7. Once you have read the new postings to an RSS feed, they will no longer display on your screen.  If you want to see older postings in Bloglines, there is a drop down menu at the bottom of the screen that allows you to display feed postings from the last hour, day, week, month, or show all the postings that have ever been posted to that feed.  You can also tick a "keep new" box beside an individual item, so that it continues to display as an unread or new item when you check Bloglines for updates.  See the picture below for examples.

8. If you want to keep track of new postings, log into Bloglines and then add the page to your Bookmarks or Favourites.  It will display a number in brackets indicating how many news items are waiting to be read.  If you want the feed to be more prominent on your browser screen, drag it to your "Links" area in IE 6.0, or your "Personal toolbar folder" in Netscape - then it will display in your browser toolbar whenever you have the browser open.

9.  Subscribe to other feeds!   There is a drop down menu on the top right side of your screen - choose "Search for Feeds" and pick any topic you like.  You can then preview the feed, or subscribe to it right from this page.
