Connectivity Funding
Since 1999,
the Ministry of Culture has supported public library connectivity
through its Internet and telecommunication connectivity project
administered by SOLS. For 2010/11, the Ministry has invested another $660,000 towards this
initiative to help support public libraries’ connectivity costs. While
$660,000 will not pay for all public libraries’ Internet connectivity,
it will allow libraries currently benefiting from this fund to maintain
their access and allow more libraries to participate if they meet
eligibility requirements. Click here to review a list of
Currently
Funded Libraries. (updated June 2010)
The priorities for funding this year are:
- Priority 1: All public libraries and First Nations public libraries
to continue or acquire a minimum target of 1Mb bandwidth or greater at
their main branch or main location;
- Priority 2: Minimum target of 1Mb bandwidth or greater at branches
in multi-branch systems.
- Priority 3: Sites other than library main locations and branches.
In addition to these priorities, the fund will also cover:
- New applications from libraries open less than 12 hours per
week;
- Wireless hotspots within public libraries;
- Ancillary costs for connectivity including but not limited to
firewalls, cable drops, last mile fibre, surge protectors, shelving
for communications equipment and other installation costs; and
- Connectivity costs for new branches.
