Have you met these Loan Stars?

Every month, we welcome 10 new Top Picks through Loan Stars, the readers’ advisory service that allows Canadian library staff to collaboratively select their favourite forthcoming titles.

It’s not surprising to us that library staff have their eyes on titles by amazing authors like Louise Penny, Arundhati Roy, Keigo Higashino, Madeleine Thien, and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, all of whom have had their books make the Loan Stars lists. But have you heard of these less well-known, but equally amazing, Loan Stars Top Picks?

Contribute to the selection of more fantastic Loan Stars Top Picks! If you’re still unsure about whether or not you should participate in Loan Stars, you should know that your vote most definitely does count. Whether you like short stories, graphic novels, biographies, poetry, translations, debut novels, or long-running series, we’re ready to take your votes and let you have your say!

Still confused about the program? Let us clear things up:

Do I have to read lots of books every month to participate?

No, we don’t expect you to read all the books. Rather, we want you to put your vote behind one or as many titles as you’d like. Is your favourite author coming out with a new book? Vote for it! You’ve only had the chance to read 30% of an ARC but you know that there are library patrons out there who would love the book? Vote for it!

If you can read several books, that’s fantastic. If you can only read one book, or even part of a book, that’s perfectly fine too — just remember to log back in to CataList to place your vote!

How do I find the books I want to read on CataList?

Browse the Loan Stars page on CataList. Here, you can find all our monthly catalogues with forthcoming titles (and seasonal catalogues if you want to check out previous lists of Loan Stars Top Picks).

If you’re on the CataList home page, finding the Loan Stars catalogues is simple: look for the Library Loan Stars box in the right-hand column. (It’s directly under the ‘Request digital copies’ box.) Click on “browse forthcoming titles and recent Top Picks.” Alternatively, in the “Find a Publisher or Imprint” column on the left-hand side of the home page, you can enter “Loan Stars” into the search bar, and click the corresponding Loan Stars box.

Why should I take part?

There are so many reasons to participate in Loan Stars. Not only does it allow you to get your hands on books pre-publication, but you also get the opportunity to show off your great editorial taste. Most importantly, you have the chance to support the authors you love by spreading love for their books — and in doing so you get to introduce readers to books that may remind them how to fall in love with reading all over again.
